In the show's last installment, Rumple/Gold (Robert Carlyle) made a pact with the monster to wake up Belle (Emilie de Ravin) from her deep sleep. Mr. Hyde said he knew of a way to lift the curse but it came with a prize. Rumple should help him conquer Storybrooke in exchange for Belle's freedom. Although the exact moment Rumple said yes to the proposition was not shown, Mr. Hyde's arrival in town signaled that the Dark One has struck again.

Just like in the past seasons, fans are expecting that the heroes will be fighting one big bad for each half. Executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis revealed, however, that they would not be following the same format in the new installment. Mr. Hyde's story will not necessarily be the focus in the first 11 episodes before the midseason finale. The showrunners opened up on their plans during a panel for a new show on Freeform (as per Entertainment Weekly).
